题目：Quorum-based Information Dissemination and Retrieval in Large Scale Sensor Networks

摘要：In a distributed sensor network system where a sensor node could be an information consumer (sink) as well as an information source, it is a difficult task to retrieve the most up to date information from such a network, or to deliver the newly detected information to the nodes of interest. Traditional data centric routing protocols often use some sort of flooding, which incurs high overhead in large scale networks. This talk will first introduce the quorum-based method that is used for efficient information dissemination or retrieval. It then discusses the challenging issues with the quorum-based method, such as guaranteed deliverability, message overhead, and node mobility. We’ll further discuss several scalable solutions to control the growth of overhead as the increase of the network size. One of such solutions is the use of CDS (Connected Dominating Sets) as a backbone in the quorum-base method. Another solution is the use of hierarchical quorum. That is to define a hierarchical structure for sensor nodes, and the information queries and data updates can be done in a hierarchical way. We’ll also discuss some sensor network applications with the quorum-based method.
报告人简介：Dr. Xiaohua Jia is currently a Chair Professor in Dept of Computer Science at City Univ of Hong Kong. He has authored over 200 research papers in the area of distributed systems and computer networks. Dr. Jia is an editor of seven international journals, including IEEE Trans. on Parallel and Distributed Systems, Wireless Networks, Journal of World Wide Web, and International Journal of Sensor Networks. He has chaired many international conferences and workshops, including PC Co-Chair of IEEE MASS’09, Chair of ACM MobiHoc’08, International Vice Co-Chair of IEEE Infocom’05.

摘要：The first decade of wireless sensor network (WSN) research has produced a rich collection of hardware platforms, network protocols, data processing algorithms, and system architectures and software. This will serve us well as we enter the second decade of the WSN research, which will be no less exciting than the previous one. This next phase of research will be increasingly characterized by the rich data our experimental testbeds will produce, the need to integrate and interoperate across heterogeneous sensornets, and the deployment of WSN in health, energy, environment, and infrastructure sensing and actuation applications. I will use concrete examples and prototypes from the community to illustrate the challenges we are facing in moving to the next decade of WSN research.
报告人简介：Feng Zhao (http://research.microsoft.com/~zhao) is a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research, where he manages the Networked Embedded Computing Group. He received a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT. Dr. Zhao was a Principal Scientist at Xerox PARC and directed PARC’s sensor network research effort, and has taught at Stanford and Ohio State. He serves as the founding Editor-In-Chief of ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks, and has authored or co-authored over 100 technical papers and books, including a recent book published by Morgan Kaufmann - Wireless Sensor Networks: An information processing approach (with Leo Guibas). He has received a number of awards, and his work has been featured in news media such as BBC World News, BusinessWeek, and Technology Review.
